Learning To Bluff Poker Hands
If you do not understand how to bluff then poker is not going to turn out too well for you. This is one of the most fundamental concepts of the game that any player can learn. Even at the very lowest skill levels of the game it is crucial to maintain a high win rate. Once you progress and begin playing higher levels of competition it is something that is absolutely essential.
The very first thing you have to realize about playing a card game such as Texas Hold’em or Pot Limit Omaha is that people do not always have a hand. However, if you play a very passive style and simply check rather than bet, you are giving your opponent the opportunity to catch cards.
Letting your opponent catch cards is a disaster. You want to bet and force the person to fold. You must remember that your opponent does not have the ability to see your cards. The way in which you bet is how they determine if they should continue on with their hands. Other things such as pot odds are another consideration.
An example would be that your opponent has only a draw. If you bluff, that is to say bet when you have nothing, then perhaps they will fold. They are not supposed to call unless they are getting correct pot odds. They might not have a strong enough hand to continue on with. This is why you are going to want to bet.
Even if your opponent does indeed have a hand, their hand might not be strong enough to continue on with. If you raise and get a caller then you should continue betting. Then on the turn if you bet again your opponent is going to be in a hard spot. The river, the last place to bet, will be a large bet and unless they have a very strong hand they are not going to want to call a large bet.
The second main reason to bluff is that you will sometimes be called. This is not as bad as is sounds. Remember, players remember your actions. This allows you to get value later on when you do have a hand. If you only bet when you had strong hands then you would be in trouble. People would remember that you only bet when you had the hands. They would then fold their weak hands and only call when they had strong hands.
It is simply a fact that you do not always have a strong hand when playing the game. This is why you need to bet regardless. Whether or not you are betting for value, as a bluff, or simply to confuse your opponent it is wise to understand the process. If you are going to be called, perhaps your opponent has show a disregard for tight play, then it might not be a good time to bluff. Likewise, if the person is playing very tight you can bluff them almost all the time.
Without the bluff poker would be a very difficult game to play. There would be very little incentive to play the game. This is why it is wise to appreciate the importance of bluffing in poker. Once you practice it this will be something that you can implement whenever you play.
